Haiku Society of America

The Haiku Society of America is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1968 promoting the writing and appreciation of haiku in English. Membership is open to all readers, writers, and students of haiku.

The Haiku Society of America is composed of haiku poets, editors, critics, publishers, and enthusiasts dedicated to promoting the creation and appreciation of haiku and related forms among its members and the public. Fostering association, friendship, communication, and mutual support among haiku poets in the United States and around the world.

Graceguts

Graceguts.com is a personal website curated by Michael Dylan Welch, a prominent figure in the haiku and poetry community. The site serves as a comprehensive repository for Welch's literary works, essays, reviews, and commentary on haiku and other poetic forms. It offers an extensive collection of resources for poetry enthusiasts, including articles on the art and craft of haiku, translations, event reports, and book reviews. Additionally, Graceguts.com features Welch's own creative writings, providing insight into his contributions to contemporary poetry and his engagement with the haiku tradition. HaikuGuy.com

Haikuguy.com is a wonderful site developed by David G. Lanoue. He is a translator of Japanese haiku, teaches English and world literature at Xavier University of Louisiana, writes haiku and haiku novels.  His book, Write like, Issa: a Haiku How-to, helps the novice haiku writer to embrace the basics of haiku by focusing on Japanese haiku master Kobayashi Issa who was renowned for his vivid imagery and deep connection to nature and everyday life.

David Lanoue’s book is a guide offering six lessons on how to write haiku, drawing inspiration from Issa and 21st-century poets who follow in his footsteps. Each lesson will guide you through the essential elements of haiku, using examples from Issa and modern poets to illustrate key points.  This book takes the reader into the journey of simplicity and clarity, of a single moment or image, as well as guides the reader to understand the essence of nature, the use of seasonal references, and many more of the basics of haiku.

Modern HAIKU

Modern Haiku is “An Independent Journal of Haiku and Haiku Studies.” It is a marvelous resource for haiku book reviews, haiku essays, and how to access the current and previous issue of Modern Haiku, their journal they publish three times a year: Summer, Autumn, and Winter-Spring. The Modern Haiku volumes present collection of haiku, senryu, haibun, and haiga.  It also offers a variety of essays and book reviews.  MH is a wonderful website for those eager to find ways to expand their creative dabbling.  MH is a cornucopia of poetry and essays that expand a writer’s creative foundation.

The Haiku Foundation

The Haiku Foundation (THF) offers the richest global collection of English-language haiku. They have a digital library that is continually expanding.  A primary focus of THF is to share the love of haiku poetry with readers and writers of haiku in every country.  

They offer writing prompts, dialogues, and information on their blog.  Anyone can subscribe to the THF email newsletter.  THF has many educational resources, and they also post links to haiku art, music, and film.  The THF’s website contains unlimited information about haiku for practitioners of all ages.  Their New to Haiku blog is written with the novice in mind and offers suggestions for editing your work, reading recommendations, how to connect with the haiku community, etc.  If the reader has a question THF has not answered, there is an open invitation to contact them about it.

This resource also presents the humorous side of haiku, such as their occasional page called Haiku Comics of Hamilton Bay or more serious posts such as Haiku for Parkinson’s.

Acorn: a Journal of Contemporary Haiku

Acorn is, per their website, a "journal of contemporary haiku". Their biannual print journal, Acorn, reflects they publish the best of current English-language haiku. The Acorn journal highlights individual poems, and brings steady attention to haiku's ability to speak to the extraordinary moments of everyday life. Authors who have not previously published in a specialized haiku journal, or who are new to this haiku poetic genre, are guided to the following introductory essay: "Contemporary Haiku: Origins and New Directions," which provides insights into Acorn’s editorial outlook. Additionally, this essay by Acorn’s editor, Susan Antolin, may also be of interest to those passionate about haiku: "Haiku Aesthetics: A Look at Understatement."
